One of the things I see constantly pop up is Sherlock Holmes references to his death at Moriarty’s hand at Reichenbach Falls.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did indeed intend to kill off Sherlock Holmes in his story “The Final Problem,” but later took it back, saying in “The Adventure of he Empty House” that Holmes had faked his death.
I think that the popularity of “The Hound of the Baskervilles” is the root of the problem. It is, by far, the most read novel and recommended in many English classes and is written in the interim between the fight at Reichenbach Falls and his resurrection in 1903 as a posthumous tale.
Clearly, this is a case of retconning, but it was done by the original author and I think it has to stand as canon and that references to Holmes’ death by Moriarty need to be corrected.
